Meet SAM. If you ask it for a soda, it will calculate the costs and – after payment – will pour you a drink that it produces all by itself from bacterial fermentation. SAM is a Symbiotic Autonomous Machine that is able to intelligently manage recipes, prices, maintenance, service and labour. This robot produces at cost, reimburses debt and pays bills as a single economic entity. Yet SAM has no legal status. With its creation, Arvdi&Marie show that machines already have the capacity to be autonomous, even though we are hesitant to trust them. Why not give them a legal status as a starting point for a trustworthy, collaborative relationship?
Both recently graduated from art and design studies in the Netherlands, Arvid Jense (NL, MSc at TU/e) and Marie Caye (FR, BA Design Academy Eindhoven) collaborate on their shared passion for art and technology. Together they combine technological expertise with critical thinking.
While in their previous work as a duo they focused on musical expression and on the hearing sense, they have recently started a new theme of research on the non-human and on how it confronts our human-centric world.
